Schools have traditionally focused on imparting technical knowledge regarding mathematics and science to their students. Although STEM-focused learning is essential, we must not overlook the “soft skills.” Today, we’re going to give you a rundown of the importance of developing collaborative and creativity skills in your children and how these skills will help them succeed.

The Importance of Creativity for Your Child

1. Physical Development

Various arts and crafts activities are physical in nature. They encourage movement and development of excellent motor skills, coordination, and control. As children manipulate tools and explore the processes of construction and assembly, they are involved in physical interaction with the world. As you can imagine, these motor skills are useful in various fields such as medicine, architecture, construction, and the like.

2. Emotional Development

Younger children can use art as an expression of their thoughts. This is useful for children who do not yet have masterful command over an extensive vocabulary. When children express their emotions through art, they tend to feel proud of their achievements. This raises their self-esteem and allows them to understand the extent of their abilities.

3. Intellectual Development

Through a creative curriculum, students develop concentration and the ability to measure and organize objects. As children grow older, creative activities shift away from arts and crafts and move towards finding creative solutions for problems through analysis and decision making.

4. Social Development

Children learn to share and interact with each other in a creative environment. For example, a drama class would foster teamwork and collaboration. For more information on collaboration, read on below.

The Importance of Collaboration for Your Child

1. Develop Social Skills

Collaborative learning encourages students from all walks of life to work together. Students are allowed to work together in a setting that perhaps would not be possible if it weren’t for collaborative learning.

When tasked to solve a group problem, children need to learn how to communicate effectively. They also need to learn how to be open-minded and give and take in conversations, rather than merely being the only one speaking or not speaking at all.

2. Learn From Peers

In general, people possess different skills, knowledge, and passions. In a small collaborative group, students can pool their talents together and learn new things from one another.

3. Build Trust

To overcome a particular hurdle, children will need to work to learn to work together. Of course, they can choose to work together without fully trusting each other. However, real results are the product of trust.

4. Gain Confidence

When students work as a team, they receive support from their teammates. Therefore, they gain more confidence in themselves and their abilities. Collaborative activities allow children to do things they never thought they could have done before.
